'They really…'– Paul Scholes asked which Man Utd legend he would put in Ruben Amorim's team, he would walk into tactical system

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher asked Paul Scholes which former Manchester United player he would sign for Ruben Amorim’s side if he had the chance.

Ruben Amorim became Manchester United manager last November after he left his native homeland and head coach role at Primeira Liga outfit Sporting CP.

The 40-year-old United manager became the sixth permanent head coach of the Red Devils after legendary former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Amorim replaced former United manager Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout and the Portuguese coach saw out the remainder of the Red Devils’ 2024-25 season.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as United manager came to an end last October after the Red Devils suffered a collapse in the start of their 2024-25 Premier League campaign.

Amorim picked up United’s campaign in 2024 and the former Sporting CP manager led the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League table last season.

Paul Scholes singles out four Man Utd legends for Jamie Carragher’s question about Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd squad

Manchester United suffered their worst Premier League finish since the league’s inception back in 1992 and will be without European football for next season.

The Red Devils could have secured Champions League football for the 2025-26 season, but United lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the 2025 Europa League final in May.

Speaking on The Overlap, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher sought Paul Scholes’ feelings on the state of Ruben Amorim’s current United first-team squad at the club.

During the show, Carragher asked Scholes: “If there was a player from the past that you could sign for Manchester United right now, in terms of what they need, who would it be?”

United legend Scholes singled out former Red Devils teammates Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo as potential candidates for his answer to the question.

However, the 50-year-old TNT Sports pundit admitted that fellow United legend Roy Keane would be his main pick for a signing for Amorim’s current Red Devils side.

Responding to Carragher, Scholes said: “Roy Keane, all day long.

“There are players like Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs… but Roy Keane.”

Why did Paul Scholes pick Roy Keane for Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd team ahead of three other Red Devils legends?

Scholes shared a legendary midfield pairing with Roy Keane and the two United legends were linchpin figures in the middle of the park for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Keane, who has been a vocal critic of the current state of United, is widely regarded as one of the best Premier League midfielders and captains of all time.

Scholes told Carragher why he felt the 53-year-old Irish ex-United midfielder was his pick for a signing ahead of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs.

“They really miss, not just a player who can control a game of football, but also that leadership around the place,” he added.

“I think that is something that’s sadly lacking.”

Keane had a remarkable spell at United, as both captain and as a midfielder, and he lifted seven Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and four FA Cups.
