Manchester United fans have made it clear: this summer, the club must land a proven, clinical striker.

With Rasmus Hojlund still struggling to lead the line at Old Trafford, supporters are desperate to see a goalscorer brought in who can take on the burden and deliver consistent end product from day one.

The need became even more urgent after Liam Delap.

The Englishman was internally viewed as a clear top target.

However he chose to join Chelsea, despite holding talks with United.

That decision has forced the club to pivot.

Ruben Amorim has wasted no time in pushing for an alternative he knows and trusts.

Red Devils make contact to sign Viktor Gyokeres

According to GiveMeSport’s exclusive, Manchester United have now made informal contact over a move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The Swedish international, who thrived under Amorim during a prolific debut season in Lisbon, is firmly on the radar at Old Trafford following a 54-goal campaign that fired Sporting to the Primeira Liga title and Taca de Portugal triumph.

Amorim is understood to be ‘desperate’ to reunite with Gyokeres.

The report states Amorim has told the United hierarchy that securing his signature is crucial ahead of his first full season in charge.

The Red Devils have already activated Matheus Cunha’s £62.5million release clause and brought the Brazilian in from Wolves.

However, there’s a firm desire to reinforce even further up top.

Gyokeres, 27, has a £59million release clause and is seen internally as a huge upgrade on current options Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

GiveMeSport sources reveal Amorim had concerns over Delap being pushed as the club’s lead target and has instead pushed hard for Gyokeres.

Gyokeres of course, already understands Amorim’s tactical demands and playing style.

United will need to sanction at least one high-profile departure to fund the deal.

Bruno Fernandes decided to stay despite interest from Al-Hilal, which means other top earners will likely be moved on.

Gyokeres isn’t the only striker under consideration.

There still remains interest around Jean-Philippe Mateta, although the Frenchman is leaning towards staying.

While Benjamin Sesko may well be the incoming, should pursuit of Gyokeres fail.
