Chelsea have made initial approaches to AC Milan to sign goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but are far from agreeing on their set price. Milan are insisting on €30 million for the French international, and the Blues don’t want to pay that amount. They are bidding around €10 million for Maignan, along with the fact that his contract is set to end in 2026.
Maignan, 29, has been an ever-present at the Italian outfit since joining from Lille in 2021, making over 160 appearances and being named captain. His worth to the club has not helped contract negotiations, which have stalled. This has left the Blues in the position of making a transfer.
The Stamford Bridge hierarchy feel Maignan is the perfect player for manager Enzo Maresca’s possession football style, with the goalkeeper highlighted for his quality in passing. Meanwhile, the Blues have five senior goalkeepers, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen as the two main options.
What Could Happen to Chelsea’s Current Crop of Goalkeepers
Chelsea signing AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan could maybe kickstart of an overall overhaul of the crop of goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge.
Robert Sanchez is the main Premier League goalkeeper. However, he has turned out to be erratic, and is unlikely to keep his role next season. The Blues are said to be keen on selling Sanchez this summer.
Next is Filip Jorgensen, who was signed on a transfer deal worth £20.7 million from Villarreal. He has been impressive and will most likely remain as a backup in case Maignan is signed.
Djordje Petrovic, following his loan success at Strasbourg, is crossing fingers regarding his future. AC Milan have also been eyeing him, and his future at Stamford Bridge could be affected by Maignan’s future in Italy.
Young shot-stopper Mike Penders will likely be sent out on loan for experience since he may not be viewed as Premier League quality yet. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, the former world-record goalkeeper, will be leaving, with the Blues prepared to will listen to offers for him.
