Florian Wirtz leaves Bruno Fernandes raging ahead of Liverpool transfer

Florian Wirtz's mistimed challenge on Bruno Fernandes left the Manchester United midfielder livid during the midweek Nations League semi-final between Germany and Portugal.

The Bayer Leverkusen star, who is expected to sign for Liverpool in the summer window, was dribbling with the ball in the latter stages of the first half, when Fernandes hooked his leg round and won possession. Wirtz put his foot down where he ball had been a mere second before, but caught his soon-to-be Premier League opponent on the the top of the foot.

It was a nasty challenge, one that angered the combustible United captain. Both he and manager Roberto Martinez brought their complaints to the fourth official, but Wirtz escaped unpunished.

It comes after a week in which Wirtz and Fernandes have dominated the transfer headlines. One is on the move; the other is remaining in situ.

It's Wirtz who looks set to complete a summer transfer, with Liverpool reportedly set to lodge a third bid after two were rejected. It has been suggested it could take a British record transfer fee of around £120 million ($163m) to prise the 22-year-old from Leverkusen.

Wirtz has also taken to social media to deny that he has demanded the no.10 jersey at Liverpool, which is currently owned by Alexis Mac Allister. In doing so, he has essentially intimated that the deal will happen.

As for Fernandes, he opted to stay at Old Trafford this week and turn down a mega-money offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

That's got to hurt!

He will hope to spearhead United's resurgence under Rubern Amorim next season. The Red Devils have already confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha, and it's believed Bryan Mbuemo will follow soon.

As for Liverpool, Wirtz's long-time teammate Jeremie Frimpong has completed his transfer already, and reports have indicated Milos Kerkez's arrival could be close at hand.

Should Liverpool sign both full-backs and Wirtz before the first transfer window shuts next Tuesday, it would represent an excellent start to the summer.

As for Germany vs. Portugal, it was goalless at half-time. The winner will face either France or Spain in Sunday's final in Munich. Wirtz started from a wide left position, and regularly drifted inside.
