Manchester United need to be smart on the recruitment front this summer
Ruben Amorim was picked as their replacement for Erik ten Hag in November and it has since been a mixed spell for him at Old Trafford so far. Prior to his move to England, he caught the eye in his native Portugal at Sporting Lisbon. He has since the chance to bring in some new signings this summer in an attempt to strengthen his squad.
Manchester United and Barcelona swap deal involving Marcus Rashford
United have wasted a lot of money over recent years and their poor recruitment has been well documented. They have fallen way behind rivals like Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. However, things aren’t all doom and gloom and they can still turn things around.
The Red Devils are one of the best supported clubs in the world and the revenue stream will always be there. They can also still attract big names which is a boost. The signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves is an impressive one and shows that they mean business.
According to reports in Spain, as per Football365, United and Barcelona could strike a swap deal agreement with Marcus Rashford and Marc-Andre ter Stegen over the coming months. That would suit both parties involved and would be a shrewd bit of business. Rashford was loaned out to Aston Villa in January and his future continues to be up in the air right now.
Rashford, 27, has been on the books of his parent club for his whole career to date and rose up through their academy ranks. He has fallen out of favour though and needs to leave permanently. That would help him get his career back on track and live up to his potential.
A transfer to Barcelona would be perfect for him. It could provide him with an exciting new challenge overseas and the opportunity to play his football in Spain. In addition, he would be joining one of the most successful teams in Europe.
Why Marc-Andre ter Stegen would be ideal for Manchester United
The goalkeeping position at United has been a troubled area for a while now. Andre Onana has made a series of high profile mistakes and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him head out the exit door. If Rashford was to join Barcelona, getting Ter Stegen in return in some capacity would be ideal.
He is a vastly experienced stopper and would be a great person to have in and around the dressing room. Their younger players would learn a lot from having someone of his stature around them. In addition, he is showing no signs of slowing down yet and would be a safe pair of hands to pick from.
Ter Stegen, 33, was snapped up by Barcelona back in 2014 and has been with the La Liga for 11 years now. He has never played in England and time is running out for him to experience life on these shores. If he did sign for the Red Devils, it would be interesting to see how he does.
The Germany international started out at Borussia Mönchengladbach and was a regular for the Bundesliga team at various different levels before he became their number one. He then switched to Spain and hasn’t looked back since. The ‘keeper has won a hatful of trophies and has that winning mentality that United need to get back.
Amorim needs more strong characters at his disposal and even if Ter Stegen isn’t guaranteed to play every minute of every match, he would still be worth bringing in for his experience. Onana can’t really be trusted too much anymore and his confidence has taken a real hit over recent times. He needs more competition for his place and getting in the right person is of massive importance.
United have been down in the dumps for some time now and they simply must ensure that they complete the correct signings. Pressure could easily start to mount on Amorim if they buy the wrong individuals and they start the next campaign slowly.
