Kings Free Agent Options: Tyus Jones

New Sacramento Kings general manager Scott Perry is expected to have a busy first offseason. There could be plenty of movement across the roster, but there’s no clearer need than their current hole at point guard.

Mentioned by Perry and Domantas Sabonis after the season ended, it’s a position that the Kings unquestionably will be looking to fill. Whether that means pursuing a star-caliber starter or a cheaper facilitator is to be seen.

Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype echoed that idea in his latest reporting, along with mentioning a potential target.

Sacramento is expected to explore the trade and free agent market for point guard help, league sources told HoopsHype.

Among several point guards on Sacramento’s radar is unrestricted free agent Tyus Jones, HoopsHype has learned.

Tyus Jones (29) spent last season with the Phoenix Suns, where he averaged 10.2 points, 5.3 assists, and 2.4 rebounds on 44.8 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three in 26.8 minutes per game.

Appearing in 81 games, Jones is a pillar of consistency. He and his brother, Tre, are well-known for their impressive assist-to-turnover ratios while orchestrating an offense.

Ironically enough, Phoenix came in last season with a similar issue to the one Perry faces. They had a talented roster (more than Sacramento’s current iteration), but no clear point guard.

While Jones has a useful skillset, that hypothetically fits well with their group, it wasn’t enough to solve their problem. The Suns still struggled to let Jones run the show and properly run their offense.

Putting the ball in the hands of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal is understandable. But it takes away from Jones’ skillset and may be a similar issue in Sacramento with the likes of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Domantas Sabonis.

At least, whichever of those remain in California’s capital headed into 2025-26.

So, while Jones may be a cheaper free agent option that could help Sacramento, it’s hard to imagine him being their long-term solution to fill their point guard void.

It never hurts to have reliable backups, though — a role that Jones has played extremely well throughout his decade in the NBA.
