Big changes could be coming to ESPN’s NBA coverage

Play-by-play announcer Mike Breen and NBA analysts Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson are set to call their first NBA finals together as a trio beginning on Thursday.

[According to Andrew Marchand](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6400351/2025/06/04/nba-finals-espn-doris-burke-mike-breen/?source=user_shared_article&utm_content=buffer007c6&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer), this could also be their last NBA finals together.

Big changes could be coming to ESPN’s NBA coverage after this year, Marchand and The Athletic report. Burke is set to call her second NBA Finals with Breen after the two did so alongside JJ Redick last year. This is Jefferson’s first time being on the call for the NBA Finals.

Marchand reports that ESPN is planning to re-sign Jefferson, but the two sides have not agreed on a deal yet. Amazon Prime Video also has interest in Jefferson, according to the report.

Marchand added that "Burke’s spot is not guaranteed for next season, according to sources familiar with ESPN’s preliminary plans."

Mike Breen appears to be the only member of the team who has his spot locked in for 2026 and beyond.

According to Marchand, ESPN has been searching for answers since it cut Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy while looking to save money back in 2023. The two teamed up with Breen to call games as well as arguably any broadcasters in any sport.

Marchand said of the move to cut Jackson and Van Gundy that it "didn’t make sense then and doesn’t make sense now."

If Burke and or Jefferson are out, it remains to be seen who could potentially fill in and replace them. According to Marchand, one option is ESPN analyst Tim Legler, who worked games this season but not on the top crew.

Jay Bilas and Cory Alexander also worked as analysts on NBA games for ESPN this year.
