As much as the focus on a transfer window is typically on incoming players, often player sales are just as important. It's a balance Everton will need to strike this summer, with the squad in need of a major overhaul.
The club is at least in a better position than last year, when the PSR pressure felt significant. As a result, a big sale always felt inevitable in the previous window, along with a number of other squad members going out the door.
In total, 10 players left the Blues in the summer of 2024. As the club prepares for a new transfer window, here is a look back at how those players fared in their respective new challenges.

Amadou Onana - Aston Villa
The Belgium midfielder was the big sale of the summer for Everton, with his move to Aston Villa believed to be worth around £50m.
After a brilliant start to life at Villa Park, Onana suffered with some lapses in form and injury issues. Villa had a frustrating season too, narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot, losing in the FA Cup final and coming up short against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Onana eventually made 34 appearances for Villa in all competitions, scoring five goals. In recent weeks he has been linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League, which could potentially earn Everton some money due to a sell-on clause.
Ben Godfrey - Atalanta
A dream move to Europa League winners Atalanta quickly turned into a bit of a nightmare for Godfrey.
Within weeks of his arrival there were rumours coming out of Italy that he could be set for a return to England. In the end, he left the club in January after just one Serie A appearance and joined Ipswich Town on loan.
At Portman Road he struggled for minutes, too, making just three top-flight appearances. Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League and Godfrey is set to return to Atalanta, where he will be hoping to impress a new manager after Gian Piero Gasperini's departure.
Neal Maupay - Marseille
Everton's enfant terrible left on loan to join Marseille this summer and there is now an obligation from the French club to make the deal permanent.
The striker, who has aimed digs at Everton throughout the season, netted just four goals in Ligue 1 this season after only making 13 starts. Marseille did enjoy a fine campaign, though, as they finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain and qualified for the Champions League.
Maupay was subject to abuse from Nice supporters earlier this year after making his return to the club. The striker has been linked with a potential move back to England lately, with Championship teams said to be in the frame for his signature.
Lewis Dobbin - Aston Villa
The youngster's move to Aston Villa in the summer did raise eyebrows. While Dobbin had showcased glimpses of talent in royal blue, forcing his way into such a strong squad was always going to be a challenge.
In truth, he never got the chance. Dobbin was shipped out on loan to West Bromwich Albion immediately and struggled in his 17 games there. In January he was sent back to Villa and moved to Norwich City, where he enjoyed a much better stint with two goals in 10 games.
A loan move or a permanent move looks to be a certainty this summer, as the 22-year-old looks for regular first-team football.
Andy Lonergan - Contract Expired
The veteran goalkeeper joined Wigan Athletic on a one-year deal in a combined player and coach capacity. The Latics confirmed the 41-year-old's departure at the end of the season.
Mason Holgate - West Bromwich Albion (Loan)
The defender moved to West Bromwich Albion on loan in the summer for a second spell with the Baggies and made 26 appearances for the club.
Holgate is out of contract with Everton this summer, with the lucrative deal he signed in 2020 poised finally to run out.
Billy Crellin - Accrington Stanley (Loan)
The young goalkeeper made 34 appearances for Accrington Stanley. The League Two side narrowly avoided relegation after a difficult campaign.
Crellin could also be set to leave the Blues this month when his contract expires. Everton do have an option to extend his deal by another year, although now 24, the former England youth internation may be keen to explore other options.
Harry Tyrer - Blackpool (Loan)
After a challenging start to his loan with Blackpool, Tyrer established himself as a regular in the team come the end of the season.
There could potentially be an opening for him as back up to Jordan Pickford following the departures of Joao Virginia and Asmir Begovic. But the 23-year-old has hinted he would be keen to return to Blackpool to earn more regular first-team football.
The Seasiders finished ninth in League One last season, with Tyrer making 38 league appearances for the club.
Andre Gomes - Contract Expired
The Portugal international did not have his contract renewed by Everton last summer and made a return to Lille on a two-year deal.
Gomes struggled to earn regular football back in Ligue 1 and only started 16 games in the French top flight. He suffered a couple of injury issues during the season, including a back problem in May that ended his campaign early.
The 31-year-old did not register a goal or an assist in 2024-25.
Dele Alli - Contract Expired
The midfielder continued to train with Everton after his contract expired and while there was some speculation over a possible new deal, it never materialised.
Dele officially joined Como in January and made his long-awaited return to competitive football as a substitute in March. However, he was sent off for a rash challenge against AC Milan and has not featured since.
He is under contract with the club until 2026.
