Bruno Guimaraes has dished out revenge for comments made about his Newcastle United performances last season.
Bruno Guimaraes has fired back at Liverpool legend Danny Murphy for his “not a great athlete” claims last season.
The Brazilian posted an impressive stat on Instagram highlighting how he covered more ground (261 miles) than any other player last season. For context, the next nearest player was Crystal Palace wing-back Daniel Munoz (242 miles).
A memorable 2024-25 saw Guimaraes etch his name into Geordie folklore by lifting the Carabao Cup. Doing so delivered on a promise he made after joining Newcastle to become a legend on Tyneside.
Bruno Guimaraes fires cheeky Instagram post
Toon fans have noticed more than anyone the graft and desire the midfielder puts into every United performance. Although the facts back up that point, not everyone has taken notice - with has irked the 27-year-old.
Guimaraes also ranked the highest for distance covered in the previous Premier League campaign - a feat he was keen to remind the naysayers on social media. Newcastle United’s captain posted: “Twice in two seasons in a row! But he isn’t athletic, is he?”
Danny Murphy called out Bruno Guimaraes
While most supporters may have forgotten the criticism, for Guimaraes, the cut must run deep. Liverpool legend Murphy questioned the Toon skipper’s athleticism earlier in the campaign.
“He’s not a great athlete,” Murphy told talkSPORT. “I feel for him because I was the same. I had to be on top of my game to look like a good player.
“When I was below my best physically, I looked a bit lethargic and sloppy at times. He needs real athletes around him to shine. Normally they have got that with Joelinton, Willock and Longstaff. They surround him with amazing legs so you see the best of him.
“But to be fair to Bruno, his durability in terms of always being available (is excellent). He always turns up. His athleticism is only a problem when he doesn’t have those around him to help him. He’s still a crucial player for them, but if you’re talking about the best midfielders in the world, that’s what will stop him being classed as one of them.”
Bruno Guimaraes sent message to Newcastle United board
Guimaraes pulled no punches to the St James’ Park hierarchy following the final-day defeat to Everton. With Champions League qualification secured, the 27-year-old;s focus switched to possible incomings.
"We are not the level that I want,” Guimaraes said. “I think for next season we are going to need more players to be honest with you. I think the squad is a little bit short.
“We have seen last season we play Champions League that we lost some players through injury and had players missing for us. We have improved our level. But next year is another competition for us. We need to work hard after the holiday, but we need to improve."
