Chelsea are said to be pushing ahead of with talks for one of their summer transfer targets.
Chelsea are said to be pushing on with their bid to land a new goalkeeper with Enzo Maresca left unsatisfied with his current options. Robert Sanchez has struggled to fully win over his boss, while Filip Jorgensen is not deemed ready to properly compete for the number one role at this stage.
The Blues are on a mission to step up again next season after a solid campaign just gone. Maresca’s men won the Conference League and bagged a top four finish to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Next season will be about putting together a solid run in Europe and closing the gap to champions Liverpool, with the club willing to invest big again to improve the squad this summer. Chelsea are already able to make headway on that front, and they already have.
The special early window is already open, and it will remain open until June 10 as part of a special schedule due to the FIFA Club World Cup, and Chelsea are about to close a deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
As far as the goalkeeper position is concerned, Chelsea are being heavily linked with a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who is out of contract with the Serie A giants at the end of next season. Milan are said to have submitted a contract offer, but it has gone unanswered for months, suggesting the goalkeeper is very much considering his options, with a sale likely this summer if Milan cannot get him to put pen to paper on a contract.
Romano on Maignan chase
Speaking to DAZN, Fabrizio Romano gave Chelsea a 60% chance of wrapping up a deal for Maignan. He said: “This would be a fantastic signing, in my opinion, and Chelsea are really aggressive on this one, because they want to get a goalkeeper before the Club World Cup. The name of Mike Maignan is from a few hours ago. I understood this morning that Chelsea made contact with AC Milan for Mike Maignan, and the percentage I'm giving for this one is 60% because my understanding is that Chelsea will try to start immediately the negotiation by sending an offer.
“The player has a new contract proposal on the table from AC Milan, but it's already since February, March - it's three, four months now, and he's still not signing that new deal. So it's quite a dangerous situation for Milan, one year left on his contract, to lose a player like Mike Maignan. So for sure, Chelsea will try to reach an agreement. Chelsea will push, and Maignan, from what I can tell you, has been also approved by the coach. I guess from this news that Maresca doesn't trust any of his keepers. It's been a difficult season for Chelsea goalkeepers, let's be fair, because Robert Sanchez didn't have a great season. Maybe the second part was better, but the first one was not the one expected.”
