Bruno Fernandes decision complicates the future of another Manchester United player

Fernandes has made his decision.

"I'm not f****** leaving," said Jordan Belfort in an iconic scene from The Wolf of Wall Street.

A fan on social media has suggested making a tifo with Bruno Fernandes' head on Belfort's body with the quote written across it, but it would never be approved by Manchester United.

Fernandes' explanation for staying at Old Trafford - he spoke at a press conference on Tuesday night - certainly wasn't as dramatic as Belfort's for staying at Stratton Oakmont.

Al-Hilal are the most successful club in Saudi Arabia and a huge financial package was on the table for Fernandes, but their interest was rebuffed and he will remain in Manchester.

"It was a very exciting offer. The president of Al Hilal was very nice to me," said Fernandes.

"They talked to my agent, but I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what I wanted to do with my future. Never did she say yes or no, or offer to make the decision for me.

"She's always been behind me with every decision. It would have been easy to change, even from a family point of view, as Ruben Neves and João Cancelo are there [with Al-Hilal].

"Our kids are used to each other, I'm used to them, but I want to play at the highest possible level, playing in the major competitions and I know I still can. And I'm happy about my decision."

Fernandes' decision to stay must be considered as excellent news. He has been the greatest signing of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, he is the standard setter in the dressing room and just won a fourth Player of the Year award.

There are doubts about a Fernandes-Ugarte pairing.

United would have banked a significant transfer fee for a player who will turn 31 in September, but nobody would have trusted the club to reinvest it sensibly in the transfer market.

Fernandes' decision has been celebrated, although it will have implications for others in the dressing room, who might have been better off if the club captain had packed his bags.

Manuel Ugarte probably falls into that category because Fernandes is expected to predominantly play in the midfield pivot next season. United have signed Matheus Cunha and they want to sign Bryan Mbeumo, so that pair will occupy the No.10 roles, provided Mbeumo also arrives from Brentford.

Fernandes increasingly played in the deeper midfield role as the season progressed, and there are doubts about whether a partnership with Ugarte is solid enough to move up the table.

There have been some good displays from Ugarte, sometimes alongside Fernandes in the pivot, but Amorim will be unsure whether they are a good enough midfield pairing for next season.

If Fernandes had decided to join Al-Hilal, a new midfielder would have been brought in this summer to play alongside Ugarte, but it now feels like Ugarte will be the player facing the axe from the starting XI.

To make Fernandes work in the No.8 role, a higher-quality midfield partner will be required, and it's disappointing that United might already need to sign a player of that ilk after splashing £42.3m on Ugarte.

There is also the question of where Kobbie Mainoo fits in Amorim's plans next season. Does he play in deeper midfield? Cunha and Mbeumo should be the first choice in the No.10 roles.

Ugarte is not the only player facing uncertainty and there are plenty of moving parts.
