Chelsea have£74m transfer problem as anxious Mike Maignan wait continues

Chelsea's goalkeeping situation - particularly under the ownership of BlueCo - is always in the spotlight. Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club from Roman Abramovich over three years ago, the Blues have signed six goalkeepers.

The four main ones - so to speak - are Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic and the incoming Mike Penders. Costing a combined figure of around £74million, none of their futures are certain.

Penders is set to arrive from Genk this summer after Chelsea agreed a deal with the Belgian club just under 12 months ago for the 19-year-old goalkeeper. football.london understands the teenager is rated very highly at Stamford Bridge and some even believe he is ready for the Premier League right now. A loan move is seen as an option, though, for the young Belgian shot-stopper given his age and inexperience.

The future of Petrovic is still up in the air. The 25-year-old enjoyed a brilliant season on loan with the BlueCo-owned Strasbourg; winning the French side's Player of the Season award. Petrovic was also named in Ligue 1's Team of the Season for his efforts in France, and is understandably hoping to be playing regular football one way or another next season.

A decision over Petrovic's future is yet to be made, football.london understands, but Chelsea did have people at every Strasbourg match over the course of the 2024/25 campaign to watch Petrovic, as well as Andrey Santos.

Elsewhere, Sanchez and Jorgensen both had stints in goal throughout the 24/25 season yet neither were able to fully convince the club. Sanchez did improve drastically in the second half of the campaign but his distribution caused groans in some matches at Stamford Bridge.

Jorgensen was Enzo Maresca's go-to goalkeeper in Chelsea's Conference League-winning campaign where he perhaps was not tested too much given the level of opposition. The Dane, though, did well with the ball at his feet and seemed to suit Maresca's ideology.

Either way, Chelsea recently made an approach to AC Milan over the possibility of signing their No.1 goalkeeper Mike Maignan, as football.london reported on Tuesday. With the 29-year-old having just over 12 months left to run on his deal with the Rossoneri, the Blues are being opportunistic given the calibre of the Frenchman.

However, around 24 hours later, football.londonlearned of some reservations Chelsea had about meeting Milan's asking price, understood to be around £25million for Maignan. Given his contract situation, Chelsea believe Milan's demands are too dear, but given Maignan is yet to commit to an extension, there is a feeling he wants to depart the San Siro. No bid has been made yet, though, while the Blues continue to assess their options.

Meanwhile, Kepa Arrizabalaga will return from his loan at Bournemouth this summer, though sources have confirmed the Spaniard does not have a future at Stamford Bridge. With 12 months left to remain on his deal, Chelsea will be looking for a fee this summer to offload the man that cost them a world-record £72million back in 2018.
