David Ornstein shares what Man City have been doing behind-the-scenes to check on Rayan…

Rayan Cherki plays with an air of arrogance that typifies all mavericks.

The Frenchman makes the game look effortless on the pitch, dancing past his opponents, creating chances for fun and dazzling crowds with his endless bag of skills and tricks.

Manchester City’s bid to sign Cherki worth £19 million, which was subsequently rejected by Lyon still shows that they believe he has the quality and character to play for Pep Guardiola.

Considering Arne Slot met Cherki as well, it seems like some of the best managers in the world feel he would be a great fit in their respective teams.

Man City doing background checks to assess Rayan Cherki’s character

However, Rayan Cherki seems to have come under criticism for his personality in the past.

Thierry Henry noticed the maturity in Cherki’s game last season when he became much more of a team player, which suggests that perhaps the question marks about him could be baseless.

Speaking to The Athletic FC Podcast, journalist David Ornstein revealed that despite the 21-year-old’s character being questioned, Manchester City always do background checks on potential new signings: “There have been some questions, fairly or not about his character, it’s not for me to say, he’s actually addressed them publicly. But you don’t get into the France picture without being a pretty solid personality and City would have done their due diligence on him, it goes without saying in terms of conversations with people that know him, people that have worked with him, with him personally.”

Kylian Mbappe admires Cherki and it seems like Pep Guardiola seems to have as well, with Ornstein revealing that he has the final say on all of Manchester City’s incomings.

“None of City’s signings come without Pep Guardiola’s blessing and so, presumably, he’s been in some of this dialogue.”

Rayan Cherki revealed whether he’s ready to play for Pep Guardiola

It seems like Manchester City fans do not have much to be worried about regarding the youngster.

Considering the French U-21 international is still a young player, with time, he will likely mature even if he has work to do on his character.

Furthermore, Cherki will be expected to be cordial with the City team as a whole and to be incredibly professional in order to succeed at the Etihad Stadium if he does make the move to the Premier League.

Cherki revealed he can play for Pep Guardiola as a part of his tactical setup while mentioning that he works on himself as a person to better himself as a player, which is good news for Manchester City.

“I am ready for any system.”

Cherki added: “I work every day, physically and mentally, to be ready. Above all, I’m trying to choose the best option for me, to develop as a person and a footballer.”
