Patriots coach already ‘big fan’ of talented rookie receiver

FOXBOROUGH – Before the NFL Draft, Patriots receivers coach Todd Downing spoke about meeting various prospects this offseason.

While preparing for the 2025 NFL Draft, Downing played a big role in evaluating the position. Although he was asked by the media about certain top receiver prospects, such as Travis Hunter, no one asked Downing about Kyle Williams.

On Monday, the assistant coach said that was a good thing because he probably would’ve tipped the Patriots’ hand. The third-round pick became a favorite of Downing and others inside Gillette Stadium. Williams has kept that up this offseason.

“If you had asked me, I would’ve had to hide my enthusiasm. I’m a big fan of Kyle,” Downing said. “It’s been great to have him here. He’s working his tail off. Like any rookie, there’s going to be some ups and downs along the road, but he’s working his tail off and he’s been great to have around.”

A five-year college player, Williams was dynamic for Washington State last fall. The receiver finished with 70 receptions, 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns. An X-receiver with the ability to beat man coverage, he fits exactly what the Patriots were looking for this offseason.

Last season, the Patriots offense struggled for a variety of reasons. The receiver group left plenty to be desired. They were led by DeMario Douglas (621 yards) and Kayshon Boutte (589 yards). That team also featured two rookies, who didn’t quite live up to expectations: Ja’Lynn Polk (12 catches for 87 yards) and Javon Baker (one catch for 12 yards).

That led the front office to search for help this offseason. The Patriots brought in two veteran free agents (Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins) but also wanted help in the draft.

Williams’ athletic ability is impressive, but what set him apart was his pre-draft visit with the Patriots. It was during that visit that he connected and formed a bond with Downing. That led the Patriots receivers coach to vouch for Williams.

“I really enjoyed his top 30 visit. That’s where we built a connection and I kind of found out how he learns and how he processes new information,” Downing said. “We spent some time in the meeting room and got to eat a meal together and really kind of got to break down more than just a quick Zoom with a draft prospect. He’s one of those guys that has an infectious energy to him.

“Obviously, on the tape there’s plenty to like – physical attributes and things that I think will benefit him in this system. Just a great kid to add to the room.”
