'New contract unlikely': Liverpool happy to lose £50m player on a free after turning down Barcelona - Ornstein

Luis Diaz’s Liverpool future has been questioned recently, with Barcelona linked as the most likely team to prise him away from Anfield this season.

In fact, just a couple of weeks ago, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco even admitted that he admires Diaz ahead of the summer window.

And, now that the transfer window is open and moves can start to be made, it’s likely that the rumour mill is going to go into overdrive.

Barcelona have now also made a formal bid for the left winger, with Liverpool making their stance on his future more than clear.

Liverpool reject Luis Diaz bid from Barcelona

As per a fresh report from David Ornstein, Liverpool have ‘rebuffed’ an offer from the La Liga giants.

As mentioned, Hansi Flick’s men have been linked with a move for Diaz over the last few weeks, but now it seems like they’ve stepped up their interest a notch or two.

“Exclusive: Liverpool rebuff Barcelona approach to discuss signing Luis Diaz,” he wrote via his personal X account.

“Barcelona made contact yesterday but Liverpool clear not for sale.

Liverpool cannot allow Luis Diaz to leave on a free transfer

It’s good news that Liverpool don’t want to sell Diaz ahead of the 2025-26 season.

However, the fact that they’d be willing to allow the Colombia international to leave as a free agent upon the expiry of his contract in a couple of years makes no sense.

The Reds have already had a massive transfer saga surrounding the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold this season, where he chose to leave upon the expiry of his contract.

And, even though Diaz’s links with Liverpool don’t go as far back as Alexander-Arnold’s, it still makes no sense for the Reds to allow him to leave on a free transfer, especially when they can get a decent fee for him now.

If Barcelona are willing to spend money on Diaz this term, it surely makes more sense for the Merseyside outfit to allow him to go so that they can bring in someone new to fill the gap.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store for the Anfield outfit, but based on the experience with Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid recently, allowing Diaz to leave for free would be a massive mistake.
