Bruno Fernandes has been dug out by Ivan Toney following his comments on rejecting a lucrative transfer to the Saudi Pro League in favour of maintaining his career at an elite level.
The 29-year-old striker, having made a significant impact with Al-Ahli following his move from Brentford for £40million, was included in the England squad selected by Thomas Tuchel for clashes against Andorra and Senegal after scoring 30 goals in 44 matches.
Toney, speaking to talkSPORT, suggested that Fernandes hasn't properly observed the Saudi Pro League's standard, questioning the Portuguese midfielder's comments about his decision to stay with Manchester United. "That's his decision. He maybe thinks it's different to me," the striker remarked.
"He obviously hasn't seen the league. The standard is high. I always say this, people always judge it on not seeing it, you know? And you have to see it first hand to have your own opinion. If people went there and went to some games, they'd soon realise.
"I know it's a good standard. You would never knock it once you've been there. It is tough."
Earlier this week, Fernandes had disclosed that after weighing things up with his wife, he opted to turn down the tempting offer from Al-Hilal.
"It was a very ambitious proposal," Fernandes revealed during a press conference before Portugal's clash with Germany. "The president was a fantastic person. We never discussed the amount [initially]. With my agent? Of course. Then, I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. She was someone who always supported me a lot.
"It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Joao Cancelo there, my children are used to playing with him in the national team, we have a great friendship.
"But I want to maintain myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, and I feel capable of it."
