Nottingham Forest given green light to pursue £33m transfer

Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League amid interest from Nottingham Forest.

The Reds have made an early start on their summer transfer business. They are closing in on a triple deal for Botafogo’s Igor Jesus, Jair Cunha and Cuiabano as they look to bolster head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

Further incomings are expected to ensure Forest have sufficient strength in depth to compete in Europe next season. And it appears they would have little problem persuading Luiz to make the move, should they decide to pursue his signature.

The former 27-year-old is said to “lean towards a return” to English football after something of a tough season in Serie A. He joined Juve from Aston Villa 12 months ago for a fee reportedly in excess of £40 million but has struggled to establish himself with the Italian giants.

All but three of Luiz’s 19 league appearances for the club came from off the bench during the 2024/25 campaign. He failed to register a single goal or assist.

By comparison, the previous season he had found the net 10 times for Villa. In total, he made more than 200 appearances and scored 22 goals during a five-year stint with the West Midlands outfit.

With that in mind, Italian publication Tuttosport report “the farewell hourglass has officially started” on Luiz’s time with Juventus. Forest are mentioned as potential suitors, along with Newcastle United, as the Brazilian “thinks about” heading back to the Premier League.

At one stage, he had been expected to “escape as soon as possible” but with no official approaches to date it seems the player will have to be patient. Previous reports suggested Juventus would want a fee in the region of €40m (£33m) for the former Villa man.

The Reds are likely to be in need of midfield reinforcements this summer. Brazilian Danilo is wanted by Lyon and there is uncertainty over when Nicolas Dominguez will be fit after he sustained a knee injury on the final day of the season.
