The famous Garibaldi of Nottingham Forest has inspired teams from all around the world to adopt the colour as their own. One such club is Independiente from Argentina.

Forest became the second English side to visit the country in 1905 after being invited by the Argentinian FA, playing eight fixtures against local opposition.

The story goes, that in Forest’s sixth fixture against Alumni Athletic Club, the president of Club Athletico Independiente was impressed with the performance and the vibrant Garibaldi donned by the Reds. He made the decision to propose a change in their colours from blue and white to their now familiar red.

The club still wear the colour to this day and some of their supporters are aware of the link between the two clubs, separated by almost 7,000 miles.

Fernando supports Independiente. Aware of the history that links Forest with the Buenos Aires-based club, he made the journey to London earlier this week with a trip to Nottingham scheduled to take in the Club’s Gold standard accredited Museum and Stadium Tour experience.

He reached out to the Club before his visit wanting to gift an Independiente shirt and scarf to be displayed in the museum in recognition of the historical links.

We were delighted to welcome Fernando to the world-famous City Ground accept the shirt and scarf he gifted to the Club and present him with a Nottingham Forest shirt of his own.

Speaking after his tour, Fernando expressed his delight at making the journey to the City Ground and pride in paying homage to the historical links between Independiente and Forest.

“The moment that we first stepped out into the stadium was incredible.

“I have done a lot of stadium tours but this is a great one. There is no hurrying you along and Alex was a great guide for us. I would recommend everyone who comes to Nottingham to take the tour.

“I brought a very special shirt to give to the Club, it was a shirt Independiente wore when winning the 2010 Copa Sudamericana belonging to Eduardo Tuzzio, one of the captains and I want the shirt and the scarf to bring fortune to you.

“We adopted the colour red because of Nottingham Forest. Me and my friends think it is so special to have a part of our club and our history here at the Club. Independiente is my life and when I think that a part of my club is here at the City Ground is great and it means everything to me.

“The visitors to the Museum and Stadium Tour will see the shirt of my club which is a fantastic legacy.”
