Newcastle United want to sign a right forward this summer - but it won’t be Bryan Mbeumo.
Newcastle United are looking to sign a right winger this summer and had identified Mbeumo as a target. The 25-year-old scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season — a total beaten only by Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah, Alexander Isak and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
Although Jacob Murphy has just enjoyed an outstanding campaign with nine goals and 14 assists, he is the squad’s only recognised option after Miguel Almiron re-joined MLS side Atlanta United in January. Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes are best suited on the left wing, while Will Osula is a striker.
Manchester United launch move for Bryan Mbeumo
However, hopes of signing Mbeumo were quashed earlier this week when it was revealed by The Athletic that the Cameroonian favours a move to Man United. That is despite Ruben Amorim’s side finishing 15th in the Premier League table last season and missing out on the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
Now, the same publication is reporting that the Red Devils have lodged their opening bid, £45million plus £10m in add-ons. However, it is likely to be rejected amid suggestions Brentford value Mbeumo closer to the £60m mark.
The precedent was set when Man United paid the £62.5m release clause to sign Matheus Cunha - another Newcastle United target - from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Brentford boss Thomas Frank warned potential suitors last month that Mbeumo wouldn’t come cheap.

"I've said many times: we are a selling club, Frank told Sky Sports. “But at the same time we have to reinforce that there are 10 clubs in the world who aren't selling clubs.
"So, of course, if the right price - and that's going to be expensive - is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open for it. But I'm very happy he's here, and I'm convinced that Bryan will still be happy playing football here."
It has also been claimed by The Times that the Old Trafford club are set to offer Mbeumo a weekly salary of £250,000, which by far surpasses Newcastle’s top earner.
Newcastle United sign Antonio Cordero
Antonio Cordero, who can play on the right or left wing, will join Newcastle from Spanish side Malaga on July 1 when his contract expires. However, the 18-year-old won’t immediately impact the first-team as the Magpies have already revealed plans to loan him out next season.
Paul Mitchell, who is leaving his position as sporting director at the end of the month, said: "Antonio is an exciting talent. We're delighted to bring him to Newcastle United amidst interest in Spain and across Europe.
"He has lots of potential, and the next phase of his development will be for the club to select a loan move that will challenge him and build on his experiences."
