David Ornstein confirms Liverpool contract plan for Luis Diaz

The future of Luis Diaz has just got slightly more muddied as the summer transfer window unravels.

It’s already been reported that Liverpool has firmly dismissed Barcelona’s inquiry for the Colombian winger.

The 28-year-old, who was instrumental in Liverpool’s Premier League title triumph with 17 goals across all competitions, has just two years remaining on his current deal.

Barcelona made their move for Diaz on Wednesday, but Liverpool’s response was swift and decisive.

The Premier League champions told Barcelona that the Colombian international is not for sale, with head coach Arne Slot viewing him as a key component for the 2025-26 season.

But despite this response, there are seemingly no plans to extend his deal.

Writing for the Athletic, David Ornstein reported:

“The winger has so far given no indication of wanting to depart. Unless that or Liverpool’s stance changes, the club would be happy to let Diaz see out his final 24 months.”

“Liverpool’s new-look hierarch has sought to address the contract issue — however progress has not materialised.”

“At Diaz’s age, their current preference would be to maximise his performance value — even if that means exiting as a free agent — unless Liverpool receive bids that enable them to land a replacement of similar or superior quality.”‘

Interestingly, Liverpool’s current approach appears pragmatic rather than proactive.

While they insist Diaz is not for sale, there are equally no ongoing discussions to extend his contract, which expires in two years.

This leaves open the possibility that, unless a significant bid arrives, Diaz could simply play out the remainder of his deal – a scenario that would be unusual for Liverpool’s typical business model under their American ownership.

The club’s valuation of Diaz has also been influenced by Al Hilal’s failed pursuit of Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes.

That saga helped Liverpool establish a benchmark for Diaz’s worth.

While Barcelona’s financial constraints make a deal challenging, Saudi clubs such as Al-Nassr are also monitoring the situation and could test Liverpool’s resolve with a lucrative offer
