Newcastle United may have just found their next Jacob Murphy - opinion

Antonio Cordero has told Newcastle United fans what they can expect from him after his arrival from Malaga.

It has been announced that Cordero is joining Newcastle United on a free transfer, with the 18-year-old expected to be loaned out soon after his arrival.

His destination remains unclear, but it has been reported that Cordero could join Ajax on a temporary deal. That would be a great place for the Spaniard to continue his development.

Antonio Cordero outlines what Newcastle United fans can expect

The main goal is to get Antonio Cordero ready for Premier League football.

Toon fans will hope that does not take too long, and Cordero has outlined what his major strengths are during an interview with Newcastle United’s official YouTube channel.

“I think that my strengths are in attack,” he said.

“Shooting at goal, making goals, final pass and assists. These are my strengths.”

Antonio Cordero will need to get to Jacob Murphy’s level at Newcastle United

As any attacker does, Cordero wants to provide goals and assists.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

When it comes to Newcastle United wingers right now, there is no one more productive in the final third than Jacob Murphy.

Murphy had a spectacular season, ending the 2024/25 campaign with nine goals and 14 assists in all competitions. In just the Premier League alone, Murphy got 12 assists. That tally was only topped by Liverpool superstar Mo Salah.

In total, Murphy got 23 goal contributions. Elsewhere in attack, Anthony Gordon got 16 and Harvey Barnes got 14.

That is the level that Cordero needs to reach. It is quite a high bar, while there should also be another winger arriving at St James’ Park this summer.

Newcastle are desperate to sign a right winger, with Bryan Mbeumo previously being the Magpies’ top target.

However, he appears to be on his way to Manchester United. Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle felt Mbeumo was too expensive, as they look for alternatives.

There would also have been issues with his wages, as it has been reported that Mbeumo wants £250,000-a-week to leave Brentford.
