Manchester United are pushing to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as the club look to sign Premier League-proven talent.
Ruben Amorim has identified the Cameroon winger as a top target after Mbeumo scored 20 goals in the Premier League in 2024/25.
The 25-year-old’s career-best season saw Mbeumo become just the seventh African footballer to reach 20 goals in a Premier League season. We’ve looked at each of the names to have achieved the feat.

Didier Drogba (2006/07 and 2009/10)
Didier Drogba breached the 20-goal barrier twice during a decorated career at Chelsea. He became the first African footballer to achieve the feat in 2006/07. He scored 20 times to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot and also netted the winner in both domestic cup finals.
The Ivorian’s most prolific campaign came in 2009/10 as the spearhead of Chelsea’s double-winning side.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea set new records for the most goals scored in a season (103), and the best goal difference in a season (+71). Drogba scored 29 goals in 32 games and hit a hat-trick in the title-clinching 8-0 win over Wigan to seal a second Golden Boot accolade.
Emmanuel Adebayor (2007/08)
Emmanuel Adebayor came of age for Arsenal during the 2007/08 season, emerging as the club’s talisman following the exit of Thierry Henry.
Adebayor scored 24 league goals to finish as runner-up to Cristiano Ronaldo for the Golden Boot and was named African Footballer of the Year. He remains the only Togolese player to win the award.
Yaya Toure (2013/14)
Perhaps the greatest individual season from a Premier League midfielder.
Yaya Toure was a force of nature to get Manchester City over the line in the 2013/14 title race, scoring 20 goals and adding nine assists for the champions.
Toure’s powerhouse performances featured lung-busting runs and fantastic free-kicks, as the Citizens came from behind to pip Liverpool to the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2024/25)
Mohamed Salah is now the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history and the fifth-highest overall.
The Egyptian recorded his fifth 20-goal Premier League season in 2024/25, to win a record-equalling fourth Golden Boot.
He’s also the only African footballer to have won the Playmaker Award, leading the league for assists on two occasions.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (2018/19 and 2019/20)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored 20+ goals in consecutive seasons for Arsenal in 2018/19 and 2019/20.
The Gabon international hit the ground running after his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, winning a share of the Premier League’s Golden Boot in his first full season.
Incredibly, that three-way tie for the 2018/19 Golden Boot involved three African footballers.
Sadio Mane (2018/19)
Sadio Mane joined Mohamed Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the joint-winner of the Premier League’s Golden Boot in 2018/19.
The Senegalese forward struck 22 times for Liverpool, who agonisingly missed out on the Premier League title.
Mane is one of just three African players to have scored 100+ goals in the Premier League, alongside Salah and Didier Drogba.

The Cameroonian stepped up following the sale of Ivan Toney to lead from the front for Thomas Frank’s side. He added eight assists in a campaign full of attacking quality and had the biggest XG over-performance in the league. Clinical.
