Tom Brady admits he won’t always be truthful as a broadcaster

Fox Sports football analyst and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady finished his first season as the top color analyst for NFL broadcasts, a job that is tough with millions of people watching. Brady gave insight on how he tries to deal with criticizing a player, which for him is a tough juggling act.

In an interview posted on Complex Sports’ Instagram account, the focus turned to how Brady handles his analysis of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Brady mentioned how he tries to balance a quarterback’s on-field performance in the current game with his experiences playing, which can be tough.

“How can I throw shade at someone who’s as amazing as he is?” Brady said. “I know what he’s been through, and I think the one position that I’m in now as broadcaster, I do feel responsibility to tell the fans what I see and be honest and upfront about everything but also realize that what these guys are doing on the field is extremely difficult. It’s a high level of skill. You’re looking at any of the 32 teams who have a starting quarterback out there and that guy is one of the best in the world at what he does. Do they make the right plays all the time? Certainly not. By the way, neither did I. I think you have to have this context and perspective.”

Brady added that his job also has a larger role in the entertainment aspect of analysis that adds details of the game not typically known to casual viewers.

“You realize that it’s not about this harsh critique and that’s not really what it’s all about anyway,” Brady said. “To me, it’s more of a let’s point out the greatness of these individual players and have fun, enjoy it, entertain a little bit and really try to educate people a little bit. That’s what I want to do on TV and thought it was a great season because I have a great team at Fox and we’re going to keep building on the success we had.”
