Report: Berta lines up compatriot for backroom role

According to Fabrizio Romano, Andrea Berta is set to bolster the team around him by bringing in fellow Italian Matteo Tognozzi.

The 38-year-old was most recently Sporting Director at Granada, but left the Spanish side in February after just over a year in the role. Before that, he spent five years as lead scout at Juventus, having also held scouting positions at Bayer Leverkusen, Hamburg, Zenit St Petersburg, and the lesser-known Italian sides Rosignano and Pontedera.

Interestingly, news of Tognozzi’s appointment comes just days after multiple reports in Italy suggested he was on the verge of returning to Juve as their new sporting director.

During his previous stint in Turin, he was credited with identifying young talents like Dean Huijsen, Kenan Yildiz and Samuel Iling-Junior, as well as playing a role in the high-profile signings of Dusan Vlahovic and Timothy Weah.

His name enters the frame just a couple of weeks after it was revealed that Jason Ayto would be leaving. He had stepped in on an interim basis following Edu’s resignation last November but was ultimately overlooked for the permanent role now held by Berta.

Is Tognozzi being lined up to fill that gap? We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
