Marshall Munetsi breaks silence on Matheus Cunha transfer with stern message for Wolves

Matheus Cunha left Wolves to join Manchester United, leaving a significant void in Vitor Pereira’s squad.

Replacing the top scorer over the previous two seasons won’t be easy for Wolves, but it’s something that will need to be resolved.

Changes behind the scenes at Wolves might aid the Old Gold’s pursuit of a Cunha replacement, as Jorge Mendes is bound to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Fosun must sufficiently replace Cunha to avoid halting Vitor Pereira’s progress in the West Midlands, but the task is easier said than done.

Emmanuel Agbadou breaks silence on Matheus Cunha’s transfer

Manchester United paid Cunha’s £62.5m release clause to sign the Brazilian in a bid to get the ball rolling under Ruben Amorim.

Considering that United finished level on points with Wolves, some fans were puzzled by Cunha’s decision, but now the transfer is complete, the Old Gold must look to the future.

Wolves have shown they can cope without Cunha, however, that doesn’t change that a strong presence in the summer transfer window is needed.

Such was warned by January signing Marshall Munetsi, who, when speaking to SportsBoom, stressed the need for depth to be added to the Wolves squad.

MORE WOLVES STORIES

“We need depth, no question,” Munetsi said.

“Losing players like Cunha will be tough; he brings creativity and energy. But Wolves can’t rely on one or two players.”

The Zimbabwe international sent a clear message to Fosun and those leading recruitment at Wolves to get to work to ‘evolve’ the squad.

“The system has to evolve, and everyone has to raise their game. Recruitment will be key. But more than that, our mindset has to shift; from survival to competing.”

Wolves fans want to see an inspired transfer window unfold, as do the players, giving Fosun no choice but to finally show their support for the club’s future.

Encouraging sign that Fosun are changing

After Matt Hobbs left his post as sporting director, a lot of information was broken regarding what is going on behind the scenes at Compton Park.

It’s understood that the penny has dropped for Wolves’ hierarchy, with Fosun and Jeff Shi now accepting the importance of investing to reach the top level.

Fosun are responsible for Wolves’ recent decline, and while the delayed realisation of the detrimental impact of a self-sustainable model is frustrating, it’s an encouraging sign.

It’s overdue and it’s cost Wolves a lot of key talent, but it’s a step in the right direction, with fans, players and the hierarchy now seeming to be on the same page.
