In-demand Championship manager 'really wants' Leicester City job but there are stumbling blocks

Danny Rohl is the new favourite to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy as Leicester City manager amid his desire to “work at the highest possible level”.

While there is still no news over van Nistelrooy’s future at City, it looks bleak for the Dutchman amid a lack of discussions with the hierarchy over future planning.

And, following Russell Martin’s appointment as Rangers manager, Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl is the new frontrunner to take van Nistelrooy’s place should City opt for a change in the hotseat.

Reports from EFL Analysis on Thursday said Rohl "really wants" to move to City and the 36-year-old German has not hid his desire to progress in the world of football management.

He said in May: “Personally, I had a fantastic time at Sheffield Wednesday. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’d like to work at the highest possible level with the best players in the near future.

“My situation in Sheffield is unofficially relatively clear. There’s a clear agreement with the owner about how I envision my future. Unfortunately, I can’t go into detail about that right now.”

Rohl has been linked to a host of clubs, including Bundesliga outfits Wolfsburg and Werder Bremen, newly-managerless Middlesbrough, and his former club Southampton. Rohl had been assistant manager with the Saints, who were strongly linked with the German before they moved to appoint Will Still.

The issue from City’s side is that any move for Rohl would cost them a compensation fee.

City are close to the wire for allowed losses under Profit and Sustainability Rules this season, perhaps explaining why there has been no movement over van Nistelrooy, as he would be due a payout if sacked.

They could sell players before the June 30 accounting deadline to ease their issues, giving them greater scope to spend on a manager.

Otherwise, they would have to wait until the next financial year, beginning July 1, by which time the players will already be back in pre-season training.

As for Rohl wanting the job, moving to a fellow Championship side, and one with a points deduction hanging over them, may not be considered as a rise up the ladder.

But Sheffield Wednesday have their own issues and, on Thursday, were placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL because of non-payment to players.
