Rasmus Hojlund would be 'happy' to move back to Italy and join Inter Milan if a deal can be struck with Manchester United, it has been claimed.

The 22-year-old signed from Atalanta for £72million in August 2023 and has flattered to deceive during his time at Old Trafford. Despite scoring 16 times in 43 games in his debut season, Hojlund's form has dropped off since.

In fact, the Dane went a staggering 21 matches without scoring before ending that drought against Leicester City in March. He finished the 2024/25 campaign with 10 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions.

Hojlund is among a host of players up for sale this summer and Inter have joined Juventus and Napoli in the race for the former Atalanta front man. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio was in London this week for talks regarding a potential move for Hojlund.

While United have been keen to offload him on a permanent deal, Inter are expected to offer a loan with an option to buy worth £38m - a deal that would become an obligation if certain conditions are met.

There is still some work ahead with no expectation that a deal is going to be done in time for Hojlund to feature in the Club World Cup, Inter are hopeful he can join. The Nerazzurri face Monterrey in their first fixture in FIFA's revamped tournament on June 18, before facing Urawa Reds and River Plate.

It's added that the Denmark forward is 'happy' to return to Serie A after a successful season with Atalanta. He netted 10 times in 34 games for La Dea before his blockbuster move to United.

Hojlund's exit would leave Joshua Zirkzee, who scored just seven goals in 49 matches during his first season at United, and 17-year-old sensation Chido Obi as options up front.

Matheus Cunha arrived in a £62.5m deal from Wolves on Sunday but there is an anticipation that he is going to be used as one of the two attacking midfielders, rather than as a No.9.

Bryan Mbeumo has been targeted as another forward reinforcement, though he would all-but certainly slot into the other No.10 berth alongside Cunha if he was to make the £60m move from Brentford.

It's expected to leave United needing a striker during the summer window. Confidence is growing over a possible deal for Viktor Gyokeres, with the Sporting CP forward said to be 'very keen' on a switch to Old Trafford.

When asked about Hojlund's progress before the Europa League final last month, Amorim issued a positive statement. He said: "I'm happy, of course all the team has to improve, but the way he runs, he fights for every ball, loses a lot of duels, wins some duels, he needs to improve the connection.

"But he is improving. I’m really happy with him, he just needs to continue working hard and better things will come."
