Report: Wolves and Leeds United in transfer battle for player Gary O'Neil wanted to sign last…

It’s building up to be an exciting transfer window for Wolves, even after the departure of Matheus Cunha from Molineux.

Cunha is now a Manchester United player after officially joining on Sunday, and Rayan Ait-Nouri is set for his Manchester City medical.

However, whilst the Old Gold are used to the doom and gloom of losing their best players, there are plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about the summer ahead.

Wolves are changing their transfer structure, and that means handing more control to Vitor Pereira, who could have Domenico Teti supporting him as a technical director and super agent Jorge Mendes.

The motivation behind the change in approach at Wolves is said to be influenced by their poor starts in recent seasons, which suggests they could get most of their business done early.

Wolves, Leeds United and Burnley want Dara O’Shea

A number 10 will be on the agenda to replace Cunha this summer, along with a wing-back to fill Ait-Nouri’s void, while a centre-back is also being targeted by Pereira.

With Yerson Mosquera poised to head out on loan after returning from his injury, an extra reinforcement is required to challenge the likes of Matt Doherty, Emmanuel Agbadou and Toti Gomes.

The Irish Sun have now reported that Wolves, Leeds United and Burnley are all weighing up a move for Ipswich Town defender Dara O’Shea after their relegation from the Premier League.

The 26-year-old featured 35 times in the top-flight last term, and even scooped the Ipswich Player of the Year award ahead of new Chelsea striker Liam Delap.

It was an impressive season for O’Shea, despite suffering relegation, and chairman Mark Ashton is eager to keep hold of the former West Brom star.

However, with an instant passage back to the top flight on the cards, it could be impossible to stand in his way, opening up the possibility of Wolves completing a mission they failed last summer.

Gary O’Neil tried to sign O’Shea in 2024

After the departure of Max Kilman to West Ham, former boss Gary O’Neil was on the hunt for defensive reinforcements.

The Englishman placed several names on his wish list towards the end of the window, including O’Shea, who was available following Burnley’s relegation.

Although Wolves submitted a ‘firm offer’ for O’Shea, they were beaten to his signature by Premier League newcomers Ipswich.

That was because Fosun were unwilling to pay the extra £2 million to sign O’Shea, and instead, let him sign for the Tractor Boys for £15 million.

Now, they could land the Irishman ahead of Leeds and Burnley as their summer transfer window begins to take shape.
