Man United would prefer to avoid putting Bryan Mbeumo on big wages after being “stung” by similar deals for Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the Bees’ prospective move to Old Trafford.
Having completed a deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Mbeumo is next on the list of targets for United this summer.
Brentford’s winger scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League as Thomas Frank’s side fought their way to a 10th-placed finish.
O’Rourke had previously revealed to Football Insider that Newcastle were leading the race to sign Mbeumo.
But with the Magpies showing little signs of life so far in the transfer window, United are now in the driving seat to complete the signing on the Cameroon international.

Bryan Mbeumo expected to sign for Man United with ‘big pay rise’
Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 22 April that there were concerns Mbeumo’s arrival could hinder Amad’s progress, leaving Ruben Amorim with the issue of how to fit both players into his starting XI.
But given the 25-year-old’s form last season, the Red Devils are looking to splash out on another attacking option for their struggling manager.
Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that whilst he fully expected the move to go ahead, United would prefer not to pay Mbeumo £250,000-a-week if they can help it.
“Yeah, I still fully expect this move to go ahead,” he told Football Insider.
“Obviously, there’s a willingness from Bryan Mbeumo to move to Old Trafford over other interested clubs as well.
“So obviously, the player is pushing for this move, although he will be trying to get the best possible deal he can get.
“He’s well within his rights to do that, trying to get big money.

“He’s obviously on around £45,000 to £50,000-a-week at Brentford. He goes on a big money move to Manchester United, he’s going to get a big pay rise, no doubts about that.
“I’m sure United, ideally, really wouldn’t want to put him on those big wages that he’s supposedly demanding of around £250,000.
“United are trying to make cutbacks themselves, not be giving out these big deals, as they’ve been stung in the past with the money they’ve given out to the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro.
“But yeah, look, Manchester United want Bryan Mbeumo.
“So if they really do want them, they’re gonna have to pay him what he wants.”

Man United prepared to accept offers for Kobbie Mainoo
With Cunha and Mbeumo arriving at Old Trafford, the Red Devils will likely need to sell to continue to finance their summer plans.
Brown revealed to Football Insider on 28 May that Man United were prepared to accept offers for Mainoo.
The England international is highly-regarded, but started just 19 games in the Premier League last season, failing to score or assist.
With the club in a difficult position financially, this comes as no surprise, given Brown had also exclusively told Football Insider in February that Man United could sell Mainoo to help boost the club’s coffers.
