Red Sox Retain Depth In Under-The-Radar Roster Move

The Boston Red Sox kinda dodged a bullet on Thursday.

Blake Sabol cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester, keeping him in the organization and fixing what could have become a major depth issue at a position in which the club certainly couldn’t afford one.

Boston suddenly needed the man they designated for assignment as recently as Sunday, as his catching partner in the minor leagues, Yasmani Grandal, informed the organization that he was stepping away from his minor league deal on Wednesday. The WooSox now have Nathan Hickey, Enderso Lira and Seby Zavala on the roster alongside Sabol, though none of those former players have experience with the Red Sox.

Sabol, on the other hand, was the emergency option and appeared in eight games when Connor Wong was on the injured list from April 7 to May 2.

The Red Sox could look to add more depth behind the dish, but that might have to wait until other issues are addressed.
