Manchester United’s search for a striker this summer continues to evolve, with the club still determined to bring in a proven goalscorer capable of elevating their attacking threat.

After missing out on Liam Delap to Chelsea and seeing targets like Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko generate interest from rivals, United remain on the lookout for value and experience.

Finding a proven striker however, is easier said than done.

Among the names considered earlier in the window was an experienced Premier League forward with European and Bundesliga pedigree, but no move ever materialised.

Jean-Philippe Mateta offered to Marseille

According to L’Equipe, Jean-Philippe Mateta has now been offered to Marseille as they hunt for options to support Amine Gouiri ahead of the new Ligue 1 campaign.

Mateta, 27, has caught the eye of decision-makers at Old Trafford as they explored stop-gap striker options.

However, nothing has progressed beyond internal discussions.

The Frenchman is said to be leaning towards staying at Selhurst Park.

Financial constraints reportedly make a move to OM unlikely for the Crystal Palace forward at this stage.

Although the club remain open to attacking reinforcements.

Marseille’s primary focus currently is FC Nantes striker Matthis Abline, for whom they’ve had two offers rejected.

The latest bid totalling €15 million, paid in instalments.

Nantes, having paid nearly €10 million plus bonuses to sign Abline from Rennes, are holding out for a significantly higher sum as they look to cash in on their 22-year-old forward.

Abline scored nine Ligue 1 goals last season.

United fans however, will be hoping the club can put an end to their goalscoring woes.

A proven, established goalscorer at a good age isn’t easy to necessarily come by.

Especially with the lack of Champions League football, making the task even tougher for the hierarchy.

However, quality simply has to be delivered in these areas – if Amorim is to ride out the storm at Old Trafford.
