ALLEN PARK -- Amon-Ra St. Brown expects to be ready for training camp after undergoing offseason knee surgery to “clean some stuff up.”
The star Detroit Lions wide receiver watched the team’s final Organized Team Activity session from the side. St. Brown was tossing the ball around with rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa on the sideline, and was speaking with Lions legend Calvin Johnson, too.
“I had a surgery on my knee after the season, just to clean some stuff up,” St. Brown said on Thursday afternoon. “I’ve been rehabbing that. But I should be good to go for training camp.”
St. Brown suffered a knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts last season, but did not specify which knee he had the procedure for.

The Lions have been keeping St. Brown busy, learning under a new offensive coordinator and some of the new formations and looks that come with that type of change. The All-Pro receiver said that aspect has been refreshing, as it’s forced him to learn the new twists to the offense under new offensive coordinator John Morton.
St. Brown said he was at the point with the offense under Ben Johnson where he knew the calls as they would come in, and didn’t have to think about it much.
“A lot of it’s the same. You would like to keep the same things that you’ve done well in the past, two, three years,” St. Brown said. “Obviously, each coach has their own wrinkles and their own little twist to what they do and what they like. We got some different terminology, some different formations. But a lot of it, I’d say the nucleus of the offense is still there. But then again, we still got different stuff, too. Johnnie Mo had a way of doing things of where he was from that worked for him and he feels like we got guys on this time that can make that work, too. He’s been awesome. He’s been very receptive. We’ve been receptive of him.
“Just to have a new face, new voice, new way of teaching, it’s good for us. We’ve been so accustomed to certain things for so long that you kind of get used to it. Then something new happens, it kind of wakes you up and gets you ready.”
The 25-year-old is coming off back-to-back first-team All-Pro nods, with 234 catches for 2,778 yards and 22 touchdowns during those two seasons.
St. Brown has worked with Morton before, and it’s hard to have better chemistry than he already has with starting quarterback Jared Goff. He’s enjoyed watching Jameson Williams and Jahmyr Gibbs develop into veterans, and expects a massive year from third-year tight end Sam LaPorta, as well.
“But a guy that I’m excited for is Sam LaPorta,” St. Brown said. “Everyone knows what he did his rookie year, and then last year, feel like he didn’t maybe get the amount of targets that he wanted. I know, he doesn’t have to say it, but I know how LaPorta feels. I know what it’s like when you know you’re a dude and you feel like you can get more, make more plays for the team and help the team win.
“Not taking away anything from what he did last year. He’s a baller. But I can tell, this year, he’s making plays out there every day. I feel like he’s going to have a big year.”
