[Claret & Hugh](https://www.claretandhugh.info/category/news/) have been informed that reports suggesting Angel Gomes is ready to reject Tottenham and sign for **West Ham** are completely false.
Speculation began to emerge this lunchtime that a shift in recruitment strategy at Spurs had led free agent Gomes to switch his attention to joining the Hammers.
One reason cited was the former Manchester United and England midfielder’s suitability to play in Graham Potter’s system.
However, C&H spoke to an associate close to Gomes today and were informed there is no chance of that happening. In fact, nothing has changed since we last updated the situation two months ago.
West Ham made two offers to Gomes — who is primarily represented by his family — but the initial approach was significantly below other deals already on the table.
Our source told us: “Angel has spoken to Potter on the phone, and he won’t be going to West Ham.”
“He doesn’t really want to play that style of football and, anyway, he wants to join a Champions League team or one that can challenge for Europe.”
That pretty much concludes the story. As nice as it would have been for West Ham to land free agents Jonathan David and his Lille teammate Gomes, the club’s lack of European football — or even close proximity to it — has killed any realistic chance of either deal happening.
