**INDIANAPOLIS –** Thursday’s news cycle at the Colts second OTA session of 2025 was **[all about Anthony Richardson’s latest injury](https://1075thefan.com/584239/anthony-richardson-aggravates-shoulder-injury-will-to-miss-rest-of-spring/)**.
But the Colts did also have an open practice on Thursday.
Here are the observations from the second viewing of the spring:
\-So much for dueling quarterback updates this spring. With Thursday’s news on Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones is this team’s starting quarterback for the rest of the spring, and possibly longer. Jones took the starting reps on Thursday and had a very nice afternoon of work. Jones was 6-of-7 during the team periods, with the lone incompletion on a very catchable ball to Michael Pittman Jr. Jones felt firsthand the exceptional deep ball ability of Alec Pierce with No. 14 “mossing” cornerback Alex Coleman for a huge completion during a 2-minute drill. That play from Jones and Pierce put the Colts inside the 10-yard line, with AD Mitchell catching a touchdown two plays later.
\-Kicker battle reps! The Colts had both Spencer Shrader and Maddux Trujillo compete in an 11-on-11 field goal session during Thursday’s practice, with a perfect day for each. Shrader’s booming leg connected on kicks from 33, 40, 45 and 54 yards. Trujillo followed with makes from 33, 40, 45 and 54, too. The undrafted kicker out of Temple also made a 40-yarder to cap the second-team’s starting offense’s two-minute drive.
\-Rookie D.J. Giddens showed off some wheels via a catch and run from Daniel Jones in an 11-on-11 rep.
\-The most impressive defensive play on Thursday was safety Nick Cross (in a contract year) prying a deep ball out of the hands of Will Mallory. Cross was one of the few individual highlights from the 2024 season.
\-While Shane Steichen’s pre-practice media session was pretty much centered on Anthony Richardson’s shoulder injury, he did single out a rookie for his early performance. Third-round cornerback Justin Walley was a name Steichen brought up when asked about the defense overall. Walley got some starting reps on Thursday with Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents not participating. Veteran safety Cam Bynum said he has been impressed by Walley’s confident, yet humble presence.
\-After we saw Tanor Bortolini starting at center last week during the open OTA session, it was Danny Pinter with the starting group this week. That is a battle to keep an eye on, with Daniel Jones now getting all of the starting reps.
\-Michael Pittman Jr. did go down in an 11-on-11 play during Thursday’s practice. It was unclear if Pittman Jr. went down without contact, or if there was a collision. The veteran wideout stayed down for a few second before limping off under his own power. He eventually walked into the building with a member of the team’s medical staff.
\-Players that didn’t appear to be participating in the second OTA of 2025 included: WR-Josh Downs (soft tissue injury), TE-Drew Ogletree (soft tissue injury), LB-Zaire Franklin (boot on his left leg after ankle surgery earlier this month), LB-Jaylon Carlies (recovering from off-season shoulder surgery), CB-Charvarius Ward (re-integrating with into team drills after time away with his family), CB-Jaylon Jones, S-Daniel Scott, WR-Blayne Taylor, CB-David Long Jr., DT-DeForest Buckner, DE-Kwity Paye, DE-Samson Ebukam, DE-Isaiah Land, TE-Maxmilian Mang, LB-Liam Anderson. Running back Jonathan Taylor was back after missing last week’s open OTA session.
