The New Orleans Saints are heading into a season of uncertainty. Derek Carr retired this off-season, leaving Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler competing for the starting job.
However, New Orleans is learning of some troubling news regarding one of their former Super Bowl champions.

Jonathan Vilma never expected to make headlines like this. In spite of his rough tackles and Super Bowl victory, the former NFL star now finds himself back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons:
Miami police arrested the 43-year-old on Wednesday for driving with a suspended license, according to veteran reporter Andy Slater. Officers reportedly pulled him over after spotting an expired tag on his vehicle.
For fans who watched him dominate on Sundays and now listen to his voice calling games on Fox, the news comes as a surprise. Vilma, polished and composed in the broadcast booth, seemed to have moved seamlessly into life after football. But this unexpected run-in with the law brings a more complicated layer to his post-NFL journey.
Vilma built his reputation on the field long before becoming a broadcaster. He dominated at the University of Miami from 2000 to 2003, earning First-Team All-American honors in his senior year. The Jets picked him 12th overall in the 2004 NFL Draft, and he immediately delivered. In his rookie season, he earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. A year later, he led the entire league in tackles with 173 and notched his first Pro Bowl appearance.

The Jets traded Vilma to the Saints in 2008, and that move turned out to be career-defining. He played a key role in New Orleans’ historic 2009 season, tallying 110 tackles and two sacks as the Saints went on to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Vilma became a fan favorite and later earned a spot in the Saints Hall of Fame in 2017.
Legal issues, however, have followed him before. Back in 2009, Miami police arrested Vilma on a felony charge of resisting arrest with violence, along with other misdemeanors. Prosecutors later dropped the charges, and Vilma made a $1,000 donation to a local hospital trauma center as part of the resolution. At the time, he publicly thanked the State Attorney’s Office for “doing the just and right thing.”
Now, more than a decade later, he finds himself once again facing legal questions in the same city. While the latest incident appears far less serious, it’s a jarring moment for a public figure who had seemingly left controversy in the past. Vilma has not yet made a public statement on the arrest.
