Chelsea or Napoli: Journalist reveals the front-runners for Man United's 20 y/o star

Manchester United are prepared for a massive squad overhaul this summer and will be open to selling forward Alejandro Garnacho.

Selling the right-footed winger will aid United under the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), as academy graduate sales count as pure profit.

Napoli still retain an interest in the Argentina international after their failed pursuit to sign him in January. Chelsea also have him on their shortlist as they seek to sign a left winger.

Garnacho reportedly wants to join the Conference League champions and has told his agent to facilitate a move to the West London outfit.

Journalist Ben Jacobs believes Napoli are the front-runners for signing the 20-year-old because Chelsea do not consider him a priority target.

He told the United stand: “From Chelsea’s point of view, there are three options at that left side at the moment; one is Garnacho, but Jamie Gittens is the player they are engaged with talks in.

“Then you have still got Nico Williams even though he could actually end up signing a new deal at Athletic.

“So Garnacho is one of few options for Chelsea, it is not as advanced or concrete as Napoli at this stage.

“Napoli, I think, are likely to return and sound out Man United and find out whether that asking price has dropped, but before they do, their priority is to get Kevin De Bruyne over the line

“If as expected, that deal is formalised, they will turn their attention to a left winger, and that is where Garnacho could become a market opportunity and potentially a deal that suits all parties.”

Jacobs believes a deal could be struck between Napoli and United, though a compromise will be necessary for that to happen.

While Amorim hopes to have the Argentine forward in his squad next season, United will likely sanction his exit if they receive the right offer.

The sale of Garnacho could help the Mancunian giants’ quest to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo and other key targets this summer.
