JACKSONVILLE – This is detail stuff. It's also important stuff.
As Liam Coen sees it, that's good stuff for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence so far this offseason. The fifth-year veteran starter is learning the intricacies necessary to excel in yet another new offense.
That makes the small stuff critical.
"His footwork has dramatically improved," Coen said.
Coen, in his first season as the Jaguars’ head coach, discussed Lawrence's progression extensively following Day 10 of 2025 organized team activities at the Miller Electric Center Thursday.
Footwork and timing are key in Coen's offense – and Coen on Thursday praised Lawrence's development in that area during the offseason program that will end with next week's three-day mandatory minicamp.
Coen on Thursday spoke of Lawrence developing a feel for the “rhythm of playing the position” in the Jaguars’ current system.
"Every system is different," Coen said. "The drop of a quarterback is very similar to a dance. Each song has a different rhythm, each play has a different rhythm, each systems have different rhythms – so continuing to develop that for him [is important]."
Coen also on Thursday re emphasized the importance of footwork and timing in his system, which is Lawrence's third offense in five NFL seasons.
"When the game is being played, we know it's lived in the gray, but we're trying to create black-and-white lines for footwork, for reads, for timing," he said. "When the things start moving, oftentimes you have to revert back to your fundamentals, your footwork, your timing.
"He has taken a step in that area as well as just the overall operation."
