Manchester United are getting ready for what is possibly their most important transfer window of recent time as they aim to bounce back from their worst season on record.

The club have finished 15th in the Premier League, missing out on European football, now looking to fight their way to a better position next season.

As such, United have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and are already on the brink of a second signing with Bryan Mbeumo wanting a move from Brentford.

However with £62.5 million already committed for Cunha and a potential £70 million for Mbeumo, the financial pressures of the club appear to be mounting.

Now the BBC has reported the comments of football finance expert Kieran Maguire about how much United would be able to spend without needing to make sales.

Manchester United’s summer spending to still comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules

United’s scope to comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR) could see the club lose £105 million over three years without triggering a breach, however their potential outlay this summer is much higher than this.

Maguire commented: “Even without European football they [United] could spend £150m without breaking into a sweat,” Maguire told BBC Sport.

“The picture that has been painted of Manchester United’s finances has exaggerated the negativity. They make more cash on a day-to-day basis than any other club in the Premier League.

“The club does not lose as much money as is claimed and their position is far better than everybody is looking at because everybody is looking at the wrong company.

“Everybody is looking at the New York company – Manchester United plc but there is another company called Red Football which is owned by the Glazers and that is forming the basis of the PSR calculation.

“The losses at Red Football Ltd are far lower than they are at Manchester United plc so therefore the extent of the damage is far less than originally envisaged.”
