BYU has signed Kevin Young to a “long-term extension” the school announced Thursday. Details of the contract were not disclosed. The school leaked the news to ESPN lead NBA Insider Shams Charania to break the news.
Brigham Young University coach Kevin Young has signed a new long-term contract extension with the program, sources tell ESPN, a new deal coming on the heels of a Sweet 16 run in his first season and the arrival of potential No. 1 NBA pick AJ Dybantsa.

BYU’s official release had a quote from Kevin Young on the extension.
“My family and I have loved our first year at BYU, being surrounded by great people, at a great university with shared values,” Young said. “I’m excited to continue to build a program based on trying to help young men prepare for the NBA, win at the highest level and do it at BYU. This is an exciting time for all of BYU Athletics with Brian Santiago recently being named athletic director. I look forward to continuing to work with Brian and am excited to be in lock step with his leadership.”
Kevin Young’s extension comes on the heels of a Sweet 16 run — BYU’s third in the last 45 years — and before the most anticipated season in school history. BYU brings in the #1 recruit in the country in AJ Dybantsa, returns All-Big 12 performer Richie Saunders, and has a host of talented players on a team that will almost assuredly be preseason top 10.
Kevin Young and his family love BYU, but sources tell me that Kevin Young had discussions with the Phoenix Suns about their head coach opening. Young’s familiarity with the organization, surrounding area, and potential massive increase in salary all were likely factors into him having discussions with the team. The Suns ultimately settled on hiring Kevin Ott yesterday.
The NBA could be a draw to Kevin Young down the road, but with young boys and a family that loves Provo, he should be locked into to building BYU’s program on the national stage for the next several years.
