Newcastle United eye Bryan Mbeumo transfer alternative as £80m price 'set'

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo celebrates scoring against Brighton

Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle

Newcastle United are in the midst of the summer transfer window merry-go-round as they look to secure deals ahead of their return to the Champions League.

Eddie Howe's men are in a much stronger position than they have been in recent windows. Their finances look positive and there is no suggestion that the Magpies will need to sell players they would rather keep.

That means Swedish sensation Alexander Isak is not available for opposition clubs which will be of huge relief for many of a Magpies persuasion. In our latest look at the media headlines, it appears that not everything is going to run smooth for Newcastle this summer though.

Newcastle eyeing Mbeumo alternative

Ahead of the likelihood that Newcastle miss out on Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, it is reported that the Magpies are looking at another Premier League striker to fill that gap. Sky Sports News' Rob Dorsett reports that Brighton's Joao Pedro is an option for the summer.

He claims that Howe wants to add another striker to his team, considering Callum Wilson's contract expires later this month. The 23-year-old Brazilian scored ten goals in 30 appearances in all competitions this season.

What Chronicle Live says: It has been a season of modest returns for Pedro but it remains his most fruitful season in the Premier League to date. At 23, he still holds a lot of potential and with Isak in the squad, there will be less pressure on Pedro to perform as the top man.

In terms of a Mbeumo alternative, Pedro appears to be a good option in the market who should not cost the world. What Newcastle must be wary of is Brighton's negotiating power, it could become easy to overpay for the centre-forward. But, keeping the price down, there are certainly worse options.

Liverpool monitoring Gordon again

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are once again monitoring Anthony Gordon in a bid to bring him back to Merseyside. This comes as Luis Diaz emerged as a priority target for Barcelona this summer.

It is believed that Newcastle are wishing to stick firmly to their £80m asking price before allowing Gordon to leave, particularly to a Premier League rival.

What Chronicle says: Gordon to Liverpool will most likely happen one day. The draw of playing for the team he grew up supporting may well be too much for Newcastle to stand in the way of. However, if it is going to happen, the Magpies need to get a good deal.

If Diaz is to leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool will undoubtedly go in hard for Gordon if they do make a move and Newcastle have to stick firm to that £80m price tag because that would represent good value for the club. Hopefully if it is to happen, it is done at the beginning of the window and not at the end to give Newcastle enough time to re-assess the options in the market.
