Liverpool look set to miss out on this transfer target as Manchester City move in.

Liverpool have kickstarted their summer transfer window off in style and are showing no signs of slowing down as they tick their way through their impressive list of targets.

With Jeremie Frimpong officially a Red and Florian Wirtz closing in on a deal, the Premier League champions are off to a superb start. As Arne Slot looks to put his mark on this inherited squad, the club are also making moves for the likes of Milos Kerkez, who has been a leading target for some time now.

David Ornstein’s latest report that Wirtz is set for a switch to Anfield and ‘only has eyes for Liverpool’ will certainly give fans a lot to brag about. However, the champions certainly aren’t going to land every target they’re after and they look set to miss out on one soon.

Liverpool to be snubbed for Rayan Cherki

Liverpool have been linked with Lyon’s versatile Rayan Cherki but after his impressive season return of 12 goals and 20 assists, it’s no surprise that the Reds are being challenged in the race for his signature.

Premier League rivals Manchester City are also in the running for the 21-year-old, and despite their disappointing season, they are in the lead to snag a deal before anyone else.

Cherki has made it clear that he is ready to move away from Lyon for a new challenge, it just comes down to who is the most convincing.

In a recent interview with L’Equipe, he said: “I’m ready for any system. I work every day, physically and mentally, to be ready. Above all, I’m trying to choose the best option for me, to develop as a person and a footballer.”

With two English powerhouses competing for his signature, it’s likely not been an easy decision for Cherki. But according to Florian Plettenberg, the forward has made his choice.

“Rayan Cherki has decided to join Manchester City. Personal terms were never an issue. Talks about a contract until 2030,” the reporter wrote on social media. An offer from Man City is on its way. The player’s camp is hoping for a quick agreement. The price valuation is €35–40 million.”

Arne Slot tried to tempt Rayan Cherki to Anfield

Clearly viewing Cherki as a valuable asset to Liverpool, Slot made the trip to the south of France to meet with the player to discuss a potential move to Merseyside.

According to The Athletic, Slot left his holiday last week and fly out to meet with Cherki.

However, even with the charm of the Dutch manager and the excitement of the current project at Anfield, the versatile forward appears to have selected Pep Guardiola and City.

Cherki is a very attractive forward player. His goal contribution numbers are impressive on their own but his ability to play on both wings, up front and in midfield only adds to his growing portfolio.
