Newcastle United scouted ‘bargain’ £30m duo as possible Bryan Mbeumo alternatives

Bryan Mbeumo was not the only right-sided attacker Newcastle United have looked at in recent months.

It is all feeling a little bit… weird, isn’t it? Just six days into the summer transfer window and perennial headloss is already engulfing Newcastle United circles on social media.

In fairness, Eddie Howe’s rallying call to the Toon hierarchy act quickly - coupled with sporting director Paul Mitchell stepping down just 48 hours later - has done little to calm the increasingly hostile storm. With Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City already making significant moves in the market, the thirst for a fresh black-and-white signing has heightened.

The Athletic reporting Bryan Mbeumo’s preference to join Man United earlier this week stoked frustration. A ready-made upgrade fresh off the back of his best-ever campaign, many viewed him - who was liked by Newcastle - as the ideal upgrade at right-wing.

It was not to be. But to repeat, there are 88 days remaining of what promises to be a roller-coaster summer. June 30 - the PSR deadline for Premier League clubs - draws closer and the Magpies can be the ones to take advantage of desperate rivals 12 months after the Elliot Anderson x Yankuba Minteh fiasco.

Newcastle United like two wingers

Newcastle will know who their targets are despite Mitchell’s approaching exit. Scouts watched Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn as he scored away to Bayern Munich in February.

A stellar 18 months at Parkhead has seen the German register 42 goal contributions in 69 games. The Mirror have also named Sporting Lisbon sensation Francisco Trincao as a potential target.

A former Barcelona youngster, the 25-year-old moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2021 but returned to Portugal a year later. Trincao enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, with 30 goal contributions in 54 games.

Duo worth less than £60m Bryan Mbeumo

Both wingers are valued at around £35million - far less than Brentford’s asking price for Mbeumo. Money is available at St James’ Park but Toon chiefs - as has been since the Saudi-backed takeover - are keen not to pay over the odds.

Newcastle have not made a concrete approach for either star but their interest proves all of the eggs were not in the Mbeumo basket. Right flank aside, the Magpies are understood to be chasing a centre-back and goalkeeper.

Nicolas Kuhn committed to Celtic

One hurdle for Newcastle is Kuhn’s comments following the 2024-25 campaign where he committed his long-term future to Celtic. He said: “When I signed here, I said the challenge was to win everything. And so far, it has been really great to be here, I’ve really liked it.

“Hopefully, there will be some more trophies to come this season. And my contract here runs until 2029, so I’m very much looking forward to what is ahead.”
