Five Man Utd players could fund Viktor Gyokeres transfer this summer

Manchester United have started their summer transfer window on the front foot with Matheus Cunha already through the door and more attacking reinforcements being targeted. United finished the Premier League season as the fifth-lowest scorers in the division - something they’ve moved quickly to correct.

While a pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo rumbles on in the background, the Red Devils were handed a timely Viktor Gyokeres boost this week, when it was reported the striker would be happy to join United, even though they aren’t involved in European competition of any kind next season. The Swede, who netted 54 times in 52 matches across all competitions throughout 2024/25, is unlikely to come cheap, with Sporting set to demand a hefty transfer fee.

Ahead of what could prove an expensive purchase, Express Sport have picked out some players United could look to offload in a bid to raise funds.

Antony

Antony’s spell with United was nothing short of a disaster, but the winger, who cost £86million in 2022, could be handed a lifeline at Bayer Leverkusen by former boss Erik ten Hag. The Bundesliga side are believed to be looking at attackers in the likely event Liverpool target Florian Wirtz leaves this summer. While United are unlikely to recoup anywhere near the mammoth fee they initially shelled out for him, his sale could boost the coffers ahead of a potential Gyokeres swoop.

Casemiro

Like Antony, Casemiro was signed by Ten Hag during the Dutchman’s first transfer window in charge, but has struggled to make the necessary impact. With one year left on his contract at United, this summer could represent the final opportunity they get to cash in. Again, the ex-Real Madrid man isn’t going to fetch a fortune, but for a club like United without the financial boost of Europe next season, every penny counts.

Alejandro Garnacho

Speaking of which, every pound raised by an academy graduate’s sale goes down on the balance sheet as pure profit. That would be the case for Alejandro Garnacho, who appeared to burn his bridge with boss Amorim following last month’s Europa League final defeat against Spurs. The winger criticised his manager’s decision not to start him in the final, with Garnacho having reportedly been told to find a new club.

Marcus Rashford

From one player not fancied by Amorim to another, with Marcus Rashford’s future likely to come away from United. Allowed to leave on loan to Aston Villa in January, the English international saw his season curtailed in April through injury. A return to Villa Park doesn’t appear to be on the cards, with Rashford on the lookout for a new home.

Jadon Sancho

And finally, another failed winger signing for United, Jadon Sancho. Having arrived at Old Trafford with plenty of promise, Sancho, whose contract is also due to expire in the summer of 2026, spent the previous season out on loan at Chelsea. The west Londoners passed up on the opportunity to sign Sancho on a permanent deal though, meaning United will once again be looking for a suitor this summer.
