Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Colts QB Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury and is expected to miss some time.

Head coach Shane Steichen was vague when discussing the timeline of Richardson’s potential return.

No matter how you look at it, this is a major setback for Richardson and could serve as the beginning of the end of his time with the franchise. Instead of getting much needed experience with his receivers during the most important offseason of his career, he’ll be on the sideline, watching the guy Chris Ballard brought in to compete with him as he takes those very valuable reps. Before, it seemed like the Colts would give Richardson every chance to win the starting job; now, it seems like it could be Daniel Jones’ gig to lose.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it here again: if Anthony Richardson is not the Colts starting QB when Week 1 rolls around, and if he can’t hold on to that job through the season, then it’s time to rip the band-aid off and blow this whole thing up. Not just with the quarterback position, but with every position, both on the field, and in the coaching staff and front office. We’ve seen more than enough of this iteration of the franchise, and the results have just not been there. To miss on the 4th\-overall pick, with the most important position in the sport, is an offense you can’t come back from, especially not when you’re out of chances like Ballard is.

Maybe this injury is just a bump in the road on Richardson’s redemption arc; maybe we’ll all be proven wrong when the season begins. It seems far more likely however, that we’ll all look back on this moment as another bad omen in a long, unending stream of them when it comes to Anthony Richardson, and his career as an Indianapolis Colt.

The only difference is this one might be the final nail in the coffin.
