Report: Premier League club are hoping to lowball Newcastle and they're ready to pounce now

Leeds are among the clubs weighing up a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff this summer.

Longstaff has enjoyed a remarkable journey at Newcastle United. The midfielder progressed through the academy before going on to play for his boyhood club on the grandest stage.

However, the story could soon be coming to a close. Newcastle will let Longstaff leave this summer, and the 27-year-old is out of contract next year anyway.

Because of his status as an academy graduate, any money received for Longstaff would go down as ‘pure profit’ on the club’s balance sheet, which would help with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Still, that doesn’t mean they’ll let him go cheaply. Leeds, however, are hoping to pounce on the situation.

Leeds prepared to make move for Sean Longstaff

According to GIVEMESPORT, the Yorkshire giants would like to beat Everton to Longstaff this summer.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Longstaff’s future at St James’ Park, the report claims Leeds boss Daniel Farke has threatened to pounce.

It’s added that those at Elland Road hope they can talk Newcastle into a cut-price deal, looking to use the fact that Longstaff could feasibly leave for free next summer to their advantage.

The report also reveals that Newcastle continue to be impressed by his attitude behind the scenes despite the ongoing speculation about his future.

How Sean Longstaff actually feels about his Newcastle United future

Longstaff is unhappy with his role at Newcastle, which is understandable.

Previously a key player under Eddie Howe, he’s lost his place in the starting lineup because of the brilliance of Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in central midfield.

Season Appearances Starts

2024-25 32 12

Sean Longstaff appearance data for Newcastle United

During the 2024/25 campaign, he made only 12 starts. The season before that, his total stood at 36.

That, coupled with the PSR benefit, look like compelling arguments to sell him. That’s not to say he won’t be missed, just that he would be a logical sale.

However, making life easy for Leeds would be foolish. If they want a Premier League-level player, they’re going to have to pay up for him, no matter his contractual situation.
