Wolves stance on PSR after Matheus Cunha’s exit as £100m update is issued - journalist

It’s looking like the exit door could be busy at Molineux this summer, but do Wolves actually need to sell?

After months of speculation, Wolves eventually resigned themselves to losing their star player this summer.

Man United secured Matheus Cunha’s signature, a transfer which injected £62.5m into Fosun’s wallet.

The Brazilian, however, may not be the only high-profile departure from Molineux, with Rayan Ait-Nouri looking set to join Man City.

Fosun face the risk of relegation by selling two of their best players, which begs the question as to why they are doing so, PSR perhaps?

Wolves’ PSR stance revealed

Wolves avoided a PSR breach in 2024, thanks to the sales of Max Kilman and Pedro Neto – but do Fosun need to sell again this summer?

According to Chris Weatherspoon from The Athletic, Wolves’ current healthy situation with PSR suggests they won’t need to sell anymore after Cunha’s departure to Old Trafford.

“The club required the sale of Ruben Neves this month two years ago to ease PSR concerns then, but the recent departure of Matheus Cunha doesn’t look to have been a regulatory necessity.

“We estimate Wolves could lose £56million in 2024-25 and stay within Premier League rules.

“Set against £70million-plus operating losses, that would be problematic, but the club banked £65.3m in player profits last summer, primarily on the sales of Maximilian Kilman and Pedro Neto.

“Cunha’s departure tips that figure over the £100m mark, and there’s little need for them to look to sell anyone else this month.”

Fosun’s summer decision will decide Wolves’ fate

It seems like ‘the penny has dropped’ for Fosun in recent weeks, with the Wolves hierarchy undergoing change, amid Matt Hobbs’ exit.

With Domenico Teti potentially joining Wolves as the club’s new technical director, fans will be hoping to see a new transfer strategy put in place – one that focuses more on arrivals than sales.

Wolves’ net spend last four years

24/25: £-8.9m

23/24: £64.14m

22/23: £-97.64m

21/22: £-4.96m

Replacing the likes of Cunha and Ait-Nouri will be no easy task, and Fosun will have to put their hands in their pockets this summer.

Money simply has to be spent, and spent smartly – otherwise the club’s Premier League status could be at risk.
