Araujo speaks out after conceding penalty in Uruguay loss

[Ronald Araujo](https://www.barcablaugranes.com/2025/5/27/24438141/really-messed-me-up-ronald-araujo-explains-why-he-didnt-have-a-great-season-for-barcelona) conceded a late penalty for Uruguay during Thursday’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Paraguay.

The Barcelona defender took a poor touch inside the penalty area, giving Julio Enciso hope of pinching the ball and then caught the winger as he tried to correct his mistake.

Enciso went on to score the resulting spot-kick, leaving Araujo feeling frustrated after the defeat. He admitted that “Maybe I should have hit it first, I tried to play my way out.”

Araujo went on to say it had been a “bitter” night for Uruguay.

“It was bitter because we wanted the win, we didn’t play well, we didn’t have a good match,” he added.

“We’re not creating with the quality of players we have to be able to do so. We also made mistakes down low, even though we’ve always been known for defending well.

“It’s clear that the results aren’t coming. We’re working to win, to keep Uruguay on top, but we have to keep working, keep trusting in the coach and the team.”

The result means that Uruguay stay fifth in the standings, a point ahead of Colombia and six ahead of Venezula, although both have a game in hand.
