The summer transfer window has barely been open for a few days, and some of the names linked with a move to Newcastle have created mixed reactions.
For every player that could make total sense, there’s one head-scratcher. One day we’re linked to Bryan Mbeumo and Marc Guehi, then it’s Aaron Ramsdale and Noni Madueke the next.
One name in particular that has divided fans over the last few weeks, however, is Jack Grealish, who out of favour at Manchester City in a crucial season before the 2026 World Cup.
There has been mixed reports around our ‘interest’ in the winger – some say we’re keen on a loan, others say it’s a non-starter – and Alan Shearer has now had this say on the rumour.
Alan Shearer would be “surprised” if Newcastle United signed Jack Grealish this summer.
Speaking to Betfair, our former No 9 was quick to question just what purpose Grealish would serve on Tyneside, feeling there is no room for the 29-year-old with Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes both operating in his best position.
“I think Jack’s best position is coming off the left. That’s where we saw the best of him at Aston Villa and he was best there for Man City,” Shearer said.
“That’s the position where Newcastle are really strong. They’ve got Barnes and Gordon for that side so I’d be surprised if Newcastle were in for him.”
With Champions League football return to St James’ Park next season, and the squad now featuring a few England hopefuls, the allure of Newcastle United is the strongest it’s been in years.
So for Jack Grealish, just shy of 30-years-old and likely relegated to the fringes of Pep Guardiola’s squad behind Jeremy Doku and Omar Marmoush, could a loan move to the North East afford him a career lifeline?
Shearer had his say on Grealish’s future and what he thinks the once Premier League record signing should do, adding: “It looks from the outside that there’s no future for him at Man City. Not whilst Pep is there.”
“When this situation happens, you either sit there and take your money or you think ‘I’ve got enough money, I need to get out and play’ and I know Jack isn’t the type to sit around and do whatever.”
At such a crucial time in Newcastle United’s history, Eddie Howe certainly won’t want passengers nor players on extortionate wages within his squad.
But few players in the Premier League can unlock a stubborn defence like Jack Grealish, something which we’ve shown at times we struggle to do. So, as implausible as the rumour may seem at this current moment in time, is it one worth looking at later in the window?
