Arsenal defender Gabriel has signed a new four year contract to keep him at the Emirates until 2029. That is a huge boost for the Gunners, with the Brazilian snubbing big money interest from the Saudi Pro League to stay at Arsenal.

Gabriel has been a huge part of Mikel Arteta’s progression and push for the title in the past three seasons. The Brazil international has formed a rock solid partnership with William Saliba, who has two years left on his deal and Arsenal want to tie him down.

Arsenal are keen to push through new deals for a number of big players including Bukayo Saka, who has already indicated he wants to commit to beyond his current deal which has two years left. Gabriel arrived from Ligue 1 side Lille in September 2020.

He has gone on to make 210 appearances in all competitions, scoring 20 goals. The 27-year-old has admitted his delight at putting pen to paper on his new deal.

“It's an amazing club and I'm so proud to sign a new contract,” he said. “I love this club, I love the fans, my teammates, I love this stadium - I'm so proud and thank you for all the support.

“I arrived here as a young player, and [now it’s] almost five years at this club. I'm so happy, and I've learned a lot here. I'm so proud of myself, and as well, to have worn the captain’s armband sometimes in this club.

“I think it's an amazing journey, and I'm so happy to continue this journey. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club, my family loves it.

“We've done a lot of good things, and now it's time to win some trophies. I want to say thank you for everything. I love the fans, and I love how they push the team. I think they are so incredible to keep pushing us every single game. We continue together for the future.”

Speaking at the end of the season, Arteta made his aim to end the title drought clear. He said: "We all feel the same way, that we feel that we are capable. It's not just a dream or it's not just something you want to do, it's that we have everything that is needed to do that.

"And even if you do, there are a lot of things that are going to play a part to win. A lot of things, what the performance is going to be, the squad quality, what the availability is going to be, referees, the schedule, who you play, when, in what kind of form they are, how many days you have to recover.

"And then the randomness of football - I cannot control what can happen in that dressing room to somebody in his personal life that can affect his performance, or that something happens, or competitors do something like in the history of this league.

You have cynicism, then boom, they do that and then there is a lot of randomness there. So, things that we can control, I guarantee we will do our very best."
