Liam Delap Club World Cup hint dropped as England announce Under-21 Euros squad

England Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has confirmed his squad for this summer's European Championships in Slovakia, and there is no Liam Delap in the selection.

The 22-year-old recently completed a £30m transfer to Chelsea from Ipswich Town and would have been eligible to feature at this summer's tournament despite no longer being under 21.

UEFA rules stipulate that players born on or after January 1, 2002 are eligible to participate in the Championships, but Delap is instead expected to join Chelsea at this summer's Club World Cup.

As a result, Carsley has not selected the former Manchester City talent in his squad for the Euros, where the Young Lions endeavour to defend the title they won in the 2023 edition.

However, the England squad is still brimming with talent, and the offensive line will be led by Liverpool's Harvey Elliott, one of two players who won the 2023 tournament still in the squad.

Arsenal prodigy Ethan Nwaneri will also be flying the flag high for England this summer, as will Manchester City's James McAtee and Birmingham City's Jay Stansfield.

Further back, Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham headlines the midfield selections; the brother of Jude Bellingham is expected to complete a move to Borussia Dortmund after helping the Black Cats reach the Premier League.

Liverpool's Tyler Morton has interestingly been selected too, despite missing the second half of the season with a shoulder injury, while Tottenham Hotspur's Archie Gray and Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson are also in.

Charlie Cresswell is the only other squad member besides Elliott who competed at the 2023 edition, and there are also spots for Tino Livramento and Jarell Quansah after they were overlooked for senior duty this month.

England are in Group B of the 2025 Under-21 Euros alongside the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany, and they face the former in their opening match on June 12.

Carsley - who has just signed a new contract with the FA - will then oversee his side's battle with Slovenia on June 15, three days before a blockbuster group-stage finale against Germany.

The top two spots in each group qualify directly for the quarter-finals, where England could face either Spain or Italy.
